5 Reasons For High Energy Bills

As winter gets closer and closer, you may be thinking back on last years energy bills and wondering why they were so expensive last winter. Did you miss something? Were you doing something wrong? You may not realize it, but there are a few things you can do around your house to improve your energy use and decrease the amount on your energy bill.

Leaks
No, we’re not talking about leaky faucets. One of the biggest ways you drive up your energy bill in your home is wasting warm air through a leaky window and door seals. Before it starts to get cold, check the seal on each window and door around your home and make sure they’re airtight. This will help keep all of your cozy, warm air from leaking out during the winter.

Turn It Off
If you’re not using a lamp or TV, or any other appliance or device in your home, make sure you have it turned off. It may not seem significant, but all of those hours that those electronics in your home are turned on without being used can really put a dent in your energy bill each month. Try reminding yourself to turn everything off in a room when you leave it if you’re not using it anymore.

Old Light Bulbs
If you’re looking for a simple way to save money on your next energy bill, try replacing all of your current light bulbs with more energy efficient LED ones. They may be slightly more expensive up front, but they’ll have you save money in the long run.

Old Appliances
If you have old appliances plugged in somewhere that never get used, all they’re doing is sucking up energy, and money out of your wallet. They may seem like “classics” but they aren’t helping that energy bill. Consider donating them, or if you really want to keep them, unplug them from the electrical outlet.

Unplug
Just because something is off, doesn’t mean it’s really off. If you’re going on vacation or will be away from your home for an extended period of time, consider unplugging all big appliances including your televisions, small kitchen appliances, your washer and dryer, computer, or anything else you can easily reach.
